Sudoku
Nine numbers. A little room to think.
Saving is unavailable in this browser. You can keep playing, but this session may not be kept after you leave.
How to play Sudoku
Fill each row, column and three-by-three box with the numbers one through nine. Twelve original practice puzzles have unique solutions, with a shared UTC daily variation and four documented logic bands.
- Printed clues cannot change. Select a blank cell, then enter a digit. Repeated digits in a row, column or box are marked and explained. An entry without a local conflict can still be incorrect.
- Pencil mode toggles small notes in empty cells. Notes are your own: they are not automatically removed when another cell changes. Erase clears the selected entry and notes; Undo steps back through this visit’s edits.
- Every cell must match the unique valid solution to finish. Reveal selected supplies a value and marks the run assisted. Only unassisted completions qualify for the best time in that difficulty band.
Controls at a glance
- Touch or mouse
- Select a cell, then use the number pad. Notes on toggles pencil marks. Printed clues use bold green digits; your entries use clay-colored digits.
- Keyboard
- Tab to the board. Arrow keys select a cell; 1–9 enters a digit. Backspace or Delete erases, and N toggles pencil mode.
- Time and progress
- The timer starts with your first edit. Pause hides the board and freezes time; leaving the tab also pauses. Every puzzle saves entries, notes and elapsed time in this browser.
A few things worth trying
- Scan a row, column and box together before entering a number. A missing digit may have only one possible home.
- Use pencil notes to compare pairs of cells, but remember to update notes as you learn more.
- Resolve marked conflicts before drawing conclusions from the rest of a row. Undo is useful when testing an idea.
Good to know
How are difficulties assigned?
Gentle solves using cells with one candidate. Steady needs a digit that has only one place in a unit. Thoughtful adds locked candidates and naked pairs. Deep stalls under this particular logic ladder and our verifier uses search; that does not mean every human must guess.
How does the daily puzzle work?
The UTC date selects a practice pattern and a deterministic digit rearrangement. Each has one solution. Patterns and arrangements can recur; there is no server competition. Reopening or choosing today’s puzzle picks the current UTC day.
What is saved?
The twelve practice puzzles and up to sixty daily records retain entries, notes and elapsed seconds. Best times are local and per difficulty band. Undo history lasts only for this page visit.
Are hints penalized?
There is no score penalty or losing timer. Revealed cells mark a run assisted, so it will not replace an unassisted best time. Restart clears that puzzle’s attempt, while keeping existing best times.
