Word Trails
A small field of letters. A trail waiting to be found.
Saving is unavailable in this browser. You can keep playing, but this session may not be kept after you leave.
How to play Word Trails
Find every listed word in four original themed fields: a garden, a shore walk, a workbench and the night sky. Start with a six-by-six field, then explore three seven-by-seven fields at your own pace.
- Words follow straight horizontal, vertical or diagonal lines. They can run forwards or backwards, and different words may share letters.
- Drag from the first letter to the last, or select both endpoints. Only a listed word is accepted. A bent path or an unrelated word does not count.
- Find the whole list to complete a theme. Next theme keeps your progress in the previous one; Restart theme clears only the current field.
Controls at a glance
- Touch or mouse
- Trace a straight line across letters, or tap the two ends. You can scroll the page outside the letter field.
- Keyboard
- Tab to the field, use arrow keys to move, and Enter or Space to select each endpoint. Escape clears a selection.
- Hints
- Hint: first letter selects the beginning of an unfound word and names it. Find the other endpoint yourself; there is no penalty.
A few things worth trying
- Scan for an unusual starting letter, then check all eight directions from it.
- When the first and last letters are visible, check the letters between them before selecting. Diagonals must have the same horizontal and vertical distance.
- Found words remain marked. Crossings can help you locate the next word; a marked letter is still usable.
Good to know
Are these random word lists?
The four small theme lists were selected for this game, without importing an external dictionary. Their letter fields use a fixed deterministic placement and remain the same when restarted.
Can a word appear more than once?
Filler letters may create another valid occurrence. Any straight occurrence of a listed word is accepted, in either direction, but each word counts only once.
What is saved?
Your active theme and every found word path across all four fields are saved in this browser. There is no timer, account or online leaderboard.
