How to play Checkers

Play an eight-by-eight checkers match with twelve pieces per side. Fern moves first toward the top; Clay moves toward the bottom. Play a computer or pass the device between two people.

  1. Men move one diagonal square forward. If any capture is available, you must jump an adjacent opponent onto the empty square beyond it. You may choose any available capture, not necessarily the longest.
  2. Continue a multiple jump with the same piece. A man reaching the far row becomes a king and ends that turn, even if a backward capture would be possible. Kings move and jump diagonally forward or backward; they do not fly across the board.
  3. Win when the other side has no legal moves, including when all its pieces are captured. This casual version automatically draws on the third repeated board with the same side to move, or after forty moves per side without a capture or an uncrowned man moving.

Controls at a glance

Touch or mouse
Select a piece, then an outlined destination. Re-select it or Cancel selection to change your mind. During a multiple jump, finish with the same piece.
Keyboard
Tab to the board. Arrows move focus between dark squares; Enter or Space selects the source and destination. Escape cancels a selection unless a jump must continue.
Opponent and review
Choose the opponent for your next match, then New match. Undo turn restores your previous decision against the computer, or the last player's turn in a two-player match. Saved history keeps undo available after reloading.

A few things worth trying

  • Before moving, look for captures on the entire board. A forced jump can pull a piece away from its defenders.
  • Keep neighboring pieces supporting each other. A lone advanced man is often easier to capture.
  • A king can return to defend. Reaching the far row ends the current turn, so plan for the opponent's reply before jumping toward promotion.

Good to know

Which rules does this use?

English checkers movement, mandatory forward captures for men, short-range kings and compulsory continuation. Draws are automatically adjudicated here rather than claimed to a tournament referee; there is no clock or touch-move penalty.

How do computer levels differ?

Gentle searches one complete turn, Steady three, and Thoughtful up to five with a bounded search budget. Multi-jumps count as one turn. These are search settings, not rated playing strengths.

Is two-player play online?

No. Friend mode lets two people share this device. There are no accounts, network opponents or rankings.

What is saved?

This browser stores the selected opponent and legal move history of the current match. New match replaces it after confirmation once play has begun. Clearing browser storage removes the saved match.
